Overall the day was a good day, many people met and lessons were learnt, I also saw amazing things as well as experienced something very futuristic.
Berkeley’s University | University of California
Today we went to Berkeley University, I was shown around by 2 PhD students, and the campus was amazing. It is like a town within itself, with amazing top-end facilities and really smart people. The buildings were well kept with that old look on the outside with modern things on the inside. The library looked amazing it was massive with thousands of books, and there was a Trex outside.
This was my first real experience of exploring any university, and it was amazing. Time is traveling quickly and I am going to have to start making decisions. Do I study in South Africa, England or maybe the USA? I have also had a lot of advice on what to study and ways in which I can study, which has been helpful. Now I need to start thinking of what I want to study. Too many questions not enough answers. It will soon lay itself out for me. I will be going to Standford University on Friday so that will be another great eye-opener.
Afternoon Toor
Golden Gate Bridge
In the afternoon we got a break where we could visit places in San Fransisco and so a group of us decided to go to Golden Gate Bridge. It was an amazing sight. We took loads of pictures of the bridge and the bay, and we then walked on the bridge, which was not a present feeling, a beautiful view I must say, because the bridge was built in sections and meant to sway and I could feel the bridge shaking. I am not the most comfortable with heights and after feeling this it did not sit well with me.
It was amazing to see that the big cords of the bridge were not just a piece of metal but millions of smaller rods. The engineering that went into this structure is incredible.
Waymo
The future is here!
It was my first time going in a car that drove with no driver, it was an amazing experience. Waymo is similar to Uber but works in San Fransico city and has cars with no drivers, I trusted the car fully but it did not feel correct to be driving with no driver.
Networking | Speach
In the evening we we had an amazing talk presented by Anto Patrex, who works:
Part-time Space Engineer @ NASA
Full-time @ xAI run by Elon
Co-founder @ Mused
From Standford University
He does all these jobs at once, still has a life and works hard at each of them.
He was inspiring as he was young and made everything relevant to us. I managed to chat 1:1 with him afterwards and he gave me some really good advice.
Trust yourself
Start now, with anything you are interested in
Make sure you keep up with what is happening around the world with technology
Have and follow a community where you are all interested in a certain technology
It was great to hear this from him, some of it I have heard before but to hear it face-to-face from somebody high up in the tech world was inspiring and reassuring, a great reminder.
Straight after Anto finished talking we got to network with some incredible people from all over San Fransisco, I found it hard to be relevant to them, but the practice that I got from talking to a stranger and the tips and tricks I got from them was really helpful.
Over All Lessons
When wanting a specific job skip HR and go straight to the department, they will do the selecting and it is easier to skip the “unknowing” messenger
Build your profile up / portfolio, this is what major companies look at, not your University
Do Hackathons, you learn and grow so much from them.
Find people that you are genuinely interested in, who are in the tech realm and who could potentially help and mentor you.
Find an Association that is related to your interests
